Ayurveda
as a Healing Modality
Since beginning my healing service in 1967, I have traveled
throughout the world. My journey has been very exciting, as
I have discovered many who want to break old patterns and heal
their pain. This demonstrates that within the heart of every
human being there is a place that knows who they truly are and
it continually motivates towards balance.
As
a healer in a wholistic practice in California, I worked long
hours providing service to others without receiving adequate
nurturing for myself. My health began to deteriorate and I became
allergic to all concentrated foods and every supplement. This
event led me back to my roots in Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient
wholistic approach that my grandmother shared with me when I
was a young girl. I journeyed to India and studied this ancient
method of healing, during which time I gained new insights about
myself; my condition healed soon thereafter.
Ayurveda
is the science or knowledge of life, the basis of which is self-understanding.
By applying certain principals, we learn to recognize our individual
uniqueness and discover our particular bodytype, of which there
are three main Ayurveda bodytypes and seven mixed bodytypes.
A greater awareness is achieved by working with our Prakruti
(individual birth constitution) through the use of herbs, diet,
and lifestyle changes. Ayurveda does not emphasize dis-ease.
Instead, it is a health care system that treats each specific
bodytype imbalance and brings it back into true balance, whereby
healing spontaneously occurs.
Among
the many aspects of Ayurveda are: marma point therapy, yoga
and relaxation, herbs, aromatherapy, meditation, lifestyle changes
(including pancha karma, a 5 or 7-day cleansing and rejuvenation
program), specific diet, mantra therapy, astrology, and gem
therapy. Working with one’s Dharma (life purpose) is another
important aspect; when health begins to deteriorate we become
distracted from our purpose and lose the passion and joy of
serving others in our unique way.
A
major portion of Ayurveda pertains to self inquiry, opening
new doors of perception, taking responsibility for our pain,
listening to our body, and creating unlimited possibilities.
It requires discipline, continuity, awareness, and direction.
This system of healing addresses not only our unique physical
characteristics but also addresses the entire body-mind-spirit
complex.
Ayurveda
is here to join with other forms of medicine and not isolate
itself, although it can stand alone as a healing system. Ayurvedic
principles can be integrated within any medical system or wholistic
modality. It can complement traditional medicine, which offers
very little preventive methods and no self health care. It is
through individual self health care that many common health
problems can be prevented.
Due
to Deepak Chopra, M.D., and many other dedicated doctors and
teachers who have educated the public, Ayurveda is being sought
to enhance the quality of life. As we individually begin to
heal and discover the joy of what we can become, greater possibilities
for our families and our communities follow. As we heal and
become integrated, others see the results and become aware of
what is possible.
Today
we have many colleges and universities throughout the country,
including Sarasota, and many practitioners are being trained
to facilitate the growing demand of this powerful science.
